Moradora
Moradora was founded in 2009 by Fiona Friesen
Dora was taught knitting and sewing skills by nuns as a basic life skill to mend and prepare clothing. Fiona's aunt on that side, also a Dora, taught her how to crochet when she was eight; her mother taught her how to knit when she was five - Fiona remembers bringing her cork knitting to show and tell in kindergarten. Mora knit all her family's sweaters out of necessity. Both grandmothers survived WWII in Europe while raising children in a climate of scarcity. Having handmade items that were decorative was coveted. They took extra care of things like tea towels, stockings, pendants, wall hangings, rugs, comforters, clothing - it was utilitarian stuff, but it had special, decorative hand-made touch that was showcased. When Fiona decided to create a line of unique handmade jewellery, knitted and quilted items, she named her company after these two women. Moradora is a tribute to their craftsmanship, thriftyness and commitment to quality. Each piece made by Fiona is truly original, made with care and designed to impress. |
